Whitney Wolfe: A Woman Determined to Change the Dating Industry At All Costs

Bumble is a dating app that has been seen to give women the upper hand in the dating sphere. In most cases, men have always been seen to rule the dating field, and they do whatever they do. In the Bumble app, this is not the case as women have been given the first priority.

The app primarily features potential matches, and you have the ability to wipe right if you are not interested in someone. What makes this app a feminist dating app is the fact that a woman is given the power to send the first message. If the female user doesn’t get in contact within twenty-four hours, the connection is lost entirely. Male Bumble users can decide to extend the match for the next twenty-four hours, but still, the female user is the one to make the first move. By June 2016, Bumble reported having more than seven million users. Of the entire user, women take nearly 55% with sixty percent being between 20-30 years.

Whitney Wolfe, who is the CEO and founder of Bumble, is an American entrepreneur who also responsible for co-founding Tinder which was also a dating app. She was born in Utah to Michael a property developer and her mother was a housewife. She majored in International Studies at the Southern Methodist University. Her interest in business enabled her to start her first business while at a tender age of nineteen years. Her business involved selling bamboo tote bags with the aim of benefiting places that had been affected by the BP oil spill. She also partnered with a celebrity stylist, Patrick Aufdenkamp, to start and launch her non organization identified as “Help Us project.” After her graduation, Whitney Wolfe moved to Southeast Asia to work in orphanages as she had the passion for helping the underserved people.

This year, Whitney Wolfe was named as one of Forbes 30 under 30 which proved she was an entrepreneur. According to research done, it shows that Tinder is the first while Bumble is the fourth most popular dating apps that were all co-founded by Whitney. She also had the opportunity of being named one of Elle’s Women in tech. She hopes her app will help in ending sexism and sexual harassment.
